A well struck free-kick from Roy Stammar was enough to ensure the Celts stayed with the pace at the top of Unibond League Division One.

Their 1-0 victory at seventh placed Prescot Cables came at a price with top scorer Mick Midwood dismissed for an off the ball incident midway through the first half.

The Merseysiders went behind on 11 minutes when a free kick from 25 yards out was finished off by Stammar with a rifling shot that went in off the bar.

The remainder of the game proved a scrappy affair with little in the way of clear cut chances for either side although Cables shaded the second period.

Matt Smithard was the Celts man of the match proving a constant thorn in the Cables side. The former Leeds United player almost doubled the Celts lead in stoppage time.

It's now two wins on the trot for Lee Sinnott's charges after a 2-1 home victory over Workington on Thursday night. Midwood proved the hero with a 25th minute strike to follow up Smithard's 17th minute opener.

The Cumbrians struck back on 35 minutes but it was the Celts who took the points with a rugged second half display.

It's a case of 'as you were' at the top of the table with just five games to go for the Throstle Nest outfit and a four point gap

A bumper crowd is expected next Saturday at Throstle Nest with Bishop Auckland the visitors. It's a must win match for the Celts if they are to stand a chance of winning the league.

Chairman Andy Firbank commented: "We've seen a big increase in crowds in recent months and we would like to see another big turn out next Saturday. Why not come down and try the Celts for the first time?

"The game is absolutely crucial to our season and with our excellent supporters showing up in force then there's no reason why we can't achieve what was thought impossible just two months ago,"
added Andy.
