4 Emergency Boxes and one Aqua Box
Our picture shows Rotarian Geoffrey Barton, Chairman of the Pudsey International Committee with the four Emergency Boxes and one Aqua Box, prior to delivery to the central distribution store in Manchester.

Affectionately known as ‘Bionic’, for his enthusiasm and his energy, Geoffrey has once again masterminded the collection of items, packing and delivery of these boxes in record time.

The object of the Emergency Box Scheme is to provide a ready stock of useful items for use in an emergency area in any part of the world. The aim is to collect new and good second-hand items, although they should be clean and serviceable.

A recommended list of items would include: Clothing, Bedding, Housewares, Tools, Toiletries and Medical and miscellaneous items. The packing cases are made of wood and often put various uses when emptied.

Fast gaining favour are the Aqua Boxes which are made of strong plastic, and are filled with welfare contents broadly in line with the standard list. When the welfare contents have been removed, the box itself can be used to purify 1,000 litres of contaminated water, a major cause of disease and death in most emergencies.
Geoffrey generously credits the success of this years effort to members of the club for donating the needed items.

President Elect, Robert Key, with the help of his customers was responsible for one of the boxes contents. Another group, ladies from the Fulneck Moravian Church, Anne Palthorpe and her friends, bought and filled one box entirely and are planning to do the same again with an Aqua Box later in the year. Another Aqua Box is being prepared by the Calverley Guides.

‘Bionic’ Barton’s next project is the Sponsored Walk on 25th April
