At the
lunchtime meeting on 3rd May our speaker was Anne Pilling and her topic was
sustainable energy.
Anne works for a
charity, Intermediate Technology Group Ltd. (ITDG), who are devoted to
enhancing the lives of remote, low income people in the third world, by the
introduction of simple but sustainable technology at affordable prices.
She spoke of the micro-hydro project in Sri Lanka and in more detail
about the solar lantern which has been developed to the stage where it is
acceptable and rugged enough to capture solar energy and bring light to homes
and communities, initially in Kenya. The development is at the stage of a
reliable manufacturer being brought on board. The first mass produced lanterns
will be available from September onwards if things go according to plans. Anne
expressed her gratitude for the funds we had raised from our sponsored walk in
1999, which led to a matching grant and almost 4000.00 donated from out club.
